In Case Anyone Wonders
In case anyone is wondering why I’m so critical of IFB’s and IFBC’s and the way they do Evangelism, I have an answer for you. I’m critical because I see the way the world reacts. I’ve done street evangelism in the FE way. I’ve heard people’s reaction to the gospel we’ve given them, and it terrifies me to see the world reacting the way they do to the ‘good news’. Let me give you an example from pop culture: (more…)
Mile Wide and Inch Deep
Exegesis is coming. I promise. It’s just not quite yet. I have about four drafts on this thing that I’m still working on. I’m going to be doing Ephesians in small-medium chunks, and that’s weighty stuff! I have one where I’m going to do 1 Timothy 3:16-17. And so on, so if you’re holding your breath waiting for some exegesis, keep holding. It’s coming. It’s just not quite ready. (more…)
How Can We Escape Death?
Who’s to blame for the life that tragedies claim?
No matter what you say it won’t take away the pain
That I feel inside, I’m tired of all the lies
Don’t nobody know why
It’s the blind leadin’ the blind.
Guess that’s the way that the story goes,
Will it ever make sense somebody’s gotta know,
There’s gotta be more to life than this,
There’s got to be more to everything

It’s sad to look at the world and see evil. It is heartbreaking to watch and hear about murder and death and violence. It is difficult to formulate an effective response in the face of such terror and horror and loss. Words cannot adequately express the emotion which accompanies these events. Inevitably the questions are raised: How can someone do this? How can God allow such evil? Isn’t God strong enough to prevent this? Who is to blame for this tragedy? (more…)
A Lunch Debate
I sat at the lunch table today while two of my friends - one of whom is a Fundamental and the other of whom is an Intellectual - debated about Soren Kierkegaard. The debate ranged around about whether Kierkegaard was a Christian or not - not something I’m going to get into.
What I am going to mention, however, is that at one point the Fundamentalist, we’ll call him Fred, took exception to Kierkegaard’s statements to the effect that true faith cannot be had if one has never doubted. To which Fred said, “I’ve never doubted God’s existence.” This is the point where I bit my tongue, because I wanted to say, “That’s because you’re a Fundamentalist. If you have never ever seriously wondered whether God was really real, and what the implications would be if you were wrong, and really took into weighty consideration the consequences of such, then you’re brainwashed!” Fortunately I’ve matured somewhat over the years and actually managed to hold the words in. In the name of not being offense I managed not to say anything. Is anyone proud of me? (more…)
Intellectual
I love being an Intellectual. I listened to Mike McConnell’s show from Wednesday April 11, 2007 and in the second hour of his broadcast, he talked to Marlene Zuk who is a Professor of Biology at The University of California at Riverside. They were talking about a book she wrote on how important bacteria and such is to us. The basic premise is that the more exposed we are to things that stimulate our immune system, the stronger it will be and the better we will be able to fight off disease in the future.
At any rate, at one point she switched focus to talking about sex (not in a perverted way) and she was saying that the ‘ideal’ way to reproduce is asexually… her actual quote was: (more…)
